You've just had an accident
Now what should you do ?

Being in an accident can be stressful and scary. Your safety and health are the most important things right now.

Here is a step-by-step guide on what you should do immediately:

1. Check for Injuries and Ensure Safety

  • Stay Calm. Take a deep breath.

  • Check Yourself and Passengers. Immediately check for any injuries. If anyone is injured, or if the accident is serious, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately and request an ambulance and police.

  • Move to Safety. If your car is drivable and it is safe to do so, move it to the side of the road or out of the way of traffic.

  • Turn on Hazard Lights. If you cannot move the vehicle, turn on your hazard lights. If you have flares or warning triangles, set them up to alert other drivers.

2. Contact Authorities

  • Call the Police. Even if the accident seems minor, it is often best to call the police (non-emergency if it's minor, or 911 if there are injuries or significant damage). A police report can be very helpful for your insurance claim.

  • Wait for Police. Stay at the scene until the police arrive and complete their report.

3. Document the Scene and Exchange Information

  • Do NOT Admit Fault. Even a simple apology can be interpreted as an admission of fault later on. Stick to the facts when speaking to the other driver or police.

  • Exchange Information: Get the following information from all other drivers involved:

    • Full name and contact information (phone number, address).

    • Insurance company name and policy number.

    • Driver's license number.

    • License plate number.

    • Vehicle make, model, and color.

  • Talk to Witnesses. If anyone saw the accident, politely ask for their name and contact information (phone number or email).

  • Take Photos/Video: If it's safe and you are able, use your phone to take pictures and videos of:

    • The damage to all vehicles involved (close-ups and wide shots).

    • The license plates of all vehicles.

    • The accident scene, including road conditions, skid marks, traffic signs, and the position of the cars.

    • Any visible injuries.

  • Write Down Details. Note the date, time, and exact location of the accident, as well as weather and road conditions.

4. Follow-Up Steps

  • Seek Medical Attention. Even if you feel fine, it's wise to be checked by a doctor as some injuries (like whiplash) may not show symptoms right away. Keep all medical records and bills.

  • Notify Your Insurance Company. Report the accident to your own insurance company as soon as possible, regardless of who you think was at fault. They can guide you through the claims process.

  • Get the Police Report. Find out when and where you can obtain a copy of the official police report.

Please prioritize your safety and your health!
